What we do

Cookhouses n Tanks a Lot

Cookhouses n Tanks a Lot was launched in 2015 to assist village communities in Papua New Guinea to create a shared space for their women to meet and develop skills, particularly in cooking and nutrition. Four cookhouses have been constructed, costing over AUD150,000 for building materials, water tanks, stoves, sinks and furnishings and tied with the Papua New Guinea donation of many valued hours of volunteer labour “sweat equity”. Theirs is the greater contribution and they are proud to make it.

The women elect their committees to develop their “Laip Skil Learning Program” with oversight from our PNG Co-ordinator, Theresia Tina RSM. In 2020, the program became part of Catherine McAuley Services Ltd, a registered charity in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

These cookhouses are located in Oamug, Western Highlands Province, Pumakos, Enga Province, Goglme, Simbu Province and Posulim, Southern Highlands Province.

Clearly, there are many opportunities for volunteering in this program in both countries. In Australia, opportunities exist for virtual and in-office volunteering or registering an occasional volunteer for fundraising events. Donations are welcome and greatly appreciated. Geographically, we are nearest neighbours forever, so our mutual friendship and our practical support matter.
