Time to move using a mantra

What is a mantra?

A mantra is described as a word, sound, or phrase repeated in spiritual practices like meditation and prayer to focus the mind and align one’s energy.

The word mantra is derived from the ancient Sanskrit language: “man” meaning “mind” and “tra” – “release”, “instrument” or “tool.”

What does Om Namaha Shivaya mean?

The words Om Namaha Shivaya are translated in different ways.  There are many translations as well as variations in spelling! – “I honour God in you”, “adoration to Shiva” or “I bow to Shiva” – Shiva, the supreme reality, the inner Self, or Supreme Self.

Another description is:

  • Om/Aum – Before the universe came into existence, there was a vibrationless emptiness of pure existence. The vibration that came from this emptiness started the world, which is referred to as Om. This is considered a bija or seed mantra that gives a boost of power and energy to the remainder of the mantra.
  • Namaha – This translates to bow, pray, or honour. It is a form of respect, homage, and adoration to the energy of Shiva.
  • Shivaya – This is a variant of the word Shiva. This can refer to the inner self and universal consciousness. It can also call upon one or more of Shiva’s known traits and qualities. https://japamalabeads.com/meaning-of-om-namah-shivaya/

You are invited to use the Mantra in your becoming Present and Attentive.  Using a mantra can reduce stress and bring a greater sense of calm.

Be creative… make up your own movements… arm or hand dance to the mantra… let it flow over you…it may even become an earworm throughout the day!

A simple movement can be used either on your own or with two people or a group.

Suggested group movement

Formation:  Two concentric Circles with pairs facing each other.

Om Namaha Shivaya…  right hands touch

Om Namaha Shivaya … left hands touch

Om Namaha Shivaya… both hands touch

Shivaya Om Namaha… hands in prayer position and bow to each other honouring God in each other.

Inner circle then moves one step to the right. The Outer circle stands still.  (Remember the Progressive Barn Dance!)  You are now with a different partner.  The movement continues. We honour God in each other.

Leader can invite all to face outwards and honour God in their family, school, friends, the people in Ukraine or maybe Gaza/Israel, the Universe.
