Sisters and people of Mercy have joined thousands around Australia on Palm Sunday calling for the closure of Australia’s off-shore detention centres and more humanitarian approach to refugees and asylum seekers.

The annual rallies, which were organised by a coalition of church and refugee groups, were held in more than 20 cities and towns throughout Australia.

Deirdre Gardiner RSM, who attended the Sydney rally, said among the crowd there was a vast array of organisations and people represented.

“In attending gatherings like these, you realise that those calling for a more humane treatment of refugees is a broad and diverse group of people from all walks of life and backgrounds. It is a much more extensive and wider group than media reports and some of our politicians would have us believe,” she said.
