On Friday 26 August, and in the 140th anniversary year of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in Bendigo, Catholic College Bendigo, hosted and welcomed fourteen Mercy Education schools from across Australia to the 2016 Frayne Speech Festival. This prestigious festival, established in 1996 by Mount Lilydale Mercy College and named after Mother Ursula Frayne, provides the opportunity for spirited competition in Debating, Public Speaking and Voice Choir. The Festival showcases the excellent speaking talents of our students and fosters a sense of unity across the schools.

The winners for 2016 were:

  • Debating – Emmanuel College, Warrnambool, Victoria
  • Voice Choir – St Aloysius College, North Melbourne, Victoria;
  • Public Speaking – Pauline Chiwawa, St Brigid’s College, Lesmurdie, Western Australia
  • DebatingBest Overall Speaker – Ashleigh Brooks, Sacred Heart College, Kyneton.


Mercy Education congratulates all participants for their commitment and their outstanding performances, as individuals and as team members.  Acknowledgment and congratulations were extended to Catholic College Bendigo Principal, Mr Brian Turner, staff and students who extended such wonderful hospitality on the day.
