St. Aloysius College holds drive to support Mercy House of Welcome in Adelaide

St. Aloysius College students with donated goods

St. Aloysius College has recently held a drive early in the school term to collect items for the Mercy House of Welcome in Adelaide.  Students from the College delivered an entire van load of food products such as long-life milk, rice, tea & coffee, and a range of toiletries – the largest donation of its kind the staff at the Mercy House of Welcome can ever recall receiving.

The Mercy House of Welcome distributes these goods to the refugees and asylum seekers who visit the drop-in centre to access a range of services.  The most utilised of those services are the English language skills classes which are essential in enabling centre attendees to find work, and the Pro Bono Legal service, providing assistance to asylum seekers with preparation and lodgement of visa applications.

Meredyth Taylor, Co-Ordinator of the Mercy House of Welcome, was overwhelmed with the generosity of the school community: “An extraordinary effort and one of which the school should be most proud…those attending the centre are most appreciative of the kindness of the people of Adelaide in the many ways they show their support”.
