Hilltop Road Public School’s Community Centre supports families in the school through a variety of initiatives including: transition to kindergarten and high school, a gardening group, a sewing circle, a playgroup and a very popular English conversation class for parents.

On Monday 17 February, Sally Bradley, Executive Director of Mercy Works and Paul Taylor, Mercy Connect Coordinator, met with the Community Liaison Officer, Catherine Gregory to find out more about the wonderful initiatives at the Community Hub and to discuss how Mercy Connect can expand its support at Hilltop Road Public School.

Mercy Connect already provides trained volunteer mentors to assist in the adult conversation class held each Monday afternoon. Mercy Connect volunteers Christine Burrows, Debbie Greene and Marilyn Lucas Smith provide expert guidance to the mothers learning English each week.

According to Catherine Gregory, the outstanding success of the adult conversation class has been due to the work of the volunteers. As a result, the principal of the primary school has asked if Mercy Connect volunteers can provide mentors to support newly arrived refugee students at the school.
