Mercy and justice conference: November 2009September 16, 2008
The Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia enthusiastically invite you to a mercy and justice conference: “Embrace the Other and Welcome Difference…”
This conference is a gathering for people who are interested in looking at justice through a mercy lens, and so we invite Sisters of Mercy, colleagues in ministry and all those seeking justice in our world.
The focus of this conference is the belief that mercy and justice are central to a Gospel way of life. Sisters of Mercy have traditionally been women of prayer and practical action. Where there has been a need we have responded.
Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, provided an inspiring model of mercy and justice through personal contact, deep listening and critical awareness of the needs of her time.
In today’s world we are called to respond to emerging issues around the globe. This calls us to be reflective, well informed and critically aware and responsive to the urgent cries of our time.
The focus of this conference will be to highlight the complex issues of social justice, drawing on research, stories and experiences. This would lead to further understanding and the desire to make a merciful response.
The conference aims:
- To provide a forum for critical thinking, reflection and action on social justice and its intrinsic relationship to mercy.
- To inform, energise and inspire one another to make a compassionate, practical response to urgent current local and global needs.
- To build relationships that will support and sustain action for mercy and justice.
- To highlight and respond to the specific issues of Women and Poverty, Eco Justice, Displaced Peoples, and Indigenous Concerns.
The conference will be held in 2009 at the Queanbeyan Conference Centre and the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, a short distance from Canberra.
The conference will commence on Friday evening November 6 and conclude on Sunday afternoon November 8, 2009. PLEASE MARK THIS DATE IN YOUR 2009 DIARY.
Optional pre and post conference programmes will also be available.
Further information will be available in the coming months.
