Maryanne Loughry RSM Attends Oceania Meeting on Refugees and Migrants
Maryanne Loughry RSM has attended the annual meeting of the Asia and Oceania Working Group of the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC).
Sr Loughry, who is the Treasurer of the ICMC and the representative of Oceania, said the main presenter at the February gathering in Malaysia was Fr Fabio Baggio (Under-Secretary for Refugees and Migrants at the Holy See) who works directly with Pope Francis.
“Fr Fabio Baggio discussed with participants about the preparation that is underway globally to develop two global compacts, one on refugees and the other on migration.
“During the week, the United Nations had released the ‘zero’ version of the compact that will now be considered by nations across the world
Fr Fabio reminded participants of the 20 points the Pope had asked to be considered in the Compacts with special emphasis on children not being detained,” she said.
The global compact for migration will be the first, intergovernmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, to cover all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner.
