Jubilee Celebrations Across the Institute

Wonderful Jubilee celebrations have been held across the Institute. We feature below just some of the many that have been held over the past few months. Congratulations to each of the sisters who celebrated with fellow sisters, family and friends.

Dubbo May 4 – Margaret Commins RSM, Marjorie Fitzgerald RSM, Jo Cook RSM and Janet Walker RSM.

Also on Saturday, May 4, more than sixty people including family, friends and sisters who had travelled some distance gathered at the Savannah Conference Centre within the Dubbo Zoo to celebrate Central A Jubilees. They acknowledged several centuries of Mercy life and ministry of Margaret Commins RSM, Marjorie Fitzgerald RSM, Jo Cook RSM and Janet Walker RSM. The also acknowledged two sisters who had recently died, and who would have also been celebrating their Jubilee. These  were Tricia Nugent RSM and Carmel Acret RSM.

The Zoo is such an attractive setting and offers plenty to see as many guests arrived early and looked around the area. Some also stayed longer chatting into the afternoon, no doubt retelling many old and well-worn stories!

The celebration took the form of a Liturgy and was followed by a delicious meal. The arrangements were all in place and left nothing to be desired. As each sister was offered a gift from the Community, a tribute was paid to the recipient on behalf of the community by one of the sisters. These were very touching, especially when  Mary Trainor RSM sang a blessing after offering the gift to Margaret Commins RSM who was celebrating 70 years.

This was the second celebration the community had enjoyed at the Zoo, and the staff told them they hope to seem them again next year!

Rockhampton May 4 – Denise Hinton RSM and Colleen Livermore RSM

Family, friends and Sisters of Mercy gathered on Saturday 4 May 2019 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of two sisters, namely Denise Hinton RSM and Colleen Livermore RSM. Fr Bryan Hanifin VG, together with Frs Noel Milner and Sijo George concelebrated the Eucharist in Our Lady of Good Counsel Chapel, The Range. Later the sisters and invited guests enjoyed a luncheon where further tributes honoured the Jubilarians.

Though Denise and Colleen have their respective origins in different parts of Australia, they share a call to follow Christ as vowed women religious in the example of our founder, Catherine McAuley. Both Denise and Colleen continue to be involved in vital ministries in their local area, namely South Mackay and Blackwater.

Brisbane May 25 – Golden Jubilee of Helen White RSM

Sisters, family and friends gathered with Helen White RSM at the Virginia Golf Club to celebrate her Golden Jubilee of profession. Prayer, laughter, stories and memories added greatly to the vibrant celebration we shared. Our community leader Bev Whitton RSM extended a warm welcome to Sr Helen, her family and friends, Gaye Lennon RSM and many visiting sisters from Geelong, Sydney, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns and Papua New Guinea. Carmel Dwan RSM led us in a prayer ritual linking the stories of Sr Helen and those sisters who were professed with her to the Biblical story of five women in the Hebrew Scriptures. All the sisters present joined with Sr Helen in the renewal of vows.

During the delicious meal we shared, Bronwyn Bell presented a PowerPoint celebration of Sr Helen’s life. Bernadette Ahearn RSM proposed an entertaining toast to which Sr Helen responded. Our celebration flowed smoothly under the able direction of our MC, Anne Hetherington RSM, who also made and iced the Jubilee cake.
Jubilee celebrations inspire us all with a sense of gratitude for years of faithful, loving service and commitment. The joy and unity among us was palpable and we are grateful to Sr Helen for her perseverance and her loving and generous service inspired by our foundress Catherine McAuley. As the gold turns to diamond in the years ahead we know your light will continue to shine. Our loving congratulations Sr Helen.

Rockhampton May 25 – Platinum Jubilee of Anne-Marie Kinnane RSM and Diamond Jubilee of Amabile Speranza RSM

Family, friends and Sisters of Mercy gathered on Saturday May 25 2019 to honour the Jubilees of two sisters; namely the Platinum Jubilee (70 years) of Anne-Marie Kinnane RSM and the Diamond Jubilee (60 years) of Amabile Speranza RSM. Bishop Michael McCarthy, together with Frs Frank Gilbert, Terry Loth, Marcel Kujur, Sijo George and Shaiju Lookose concelebrated the Eucharist in Our Lady of Good Counsel Chapel, The Range. Later the sisters and invited guests enjoyed a light luncheon in the adjoining function room ‘Stoneleigh’ where further tributes honoured Sisters Anne-Marie and Amabile.

Both sisters entered the former Rockhampton Congregation with Sister Anne-Marie professed on 23 January 1949 and Sister Amabile professed on 31 May 1959. Anne-Marie and Amabile have ministered extensively in the Rockhampton Diocese and beyond; living out the call to follow Christ as vowed women religious in the example of our foundress, Catherine McAuley.

We offer a sincere and heartfelt ‘Congratulations’ to each of these sisters whose gifts have enriched the lives of many people in our Diocese and beyond, in the places where they have witnessed to Gospel values and a Mercy way of life.
