Celebrating 50 years of Mercy in PNGApril 27, 2006
Eighty Sisters of Mercy will gather this Saturday April 29 at Kefamo, Goroka, PNG for the 50th jubilee celebration of foundation. This, the main celebration day, will coincide with the visit of the Australian Congregation Leaders.
The approval from Rome of the foundation in PNG to be an autonomous region within the Australian Institute is also being celebrated.
Since the first sisters arrived in 1956, 207 Sisters of Mercy have ministered in PNG. Their energies were directed to health, education and welfare.
Today, 27 Sisters of Mercy, all but 7 of them national Sisters, have increasingly found that the Sisters’ ministry is directed towards assisting the community in developmental projects, focusing on long term sustainable solutions to social problems.
