On Sunday May 23, the Feast of Pentecost, the Sisters of Mercy, Brisbane gathered in All Hallows’ Chapel with 15 of the congregation’s 21 jubilarians to celebrate the gifting of the Spirit and the “courageous and authentic living of Mercy across the years” of these amazing women, who between them witness “commitment to the work of the Gospel” spanning more than a millennium.
Sandra Lupi, Congregation Leader, acknowledged the presence of Fathers David Hore CSsR and Ray Chapman SM as celebrants, named each of the 21 jubilarians, drawing them into the heart of the celebration and invited the sisters to reflect, remember and rejoice “about the marvels of God” and these special women.
The readings from Pentecost reminded all that “the Spirit had made her home in you” and that we are enabled “to continue the work of the Gospel” because the Spirit “will teach you and remind you of all I have said to you”.
The ritual actions of anointing with Oil of Chrism and enfolding each jubilarian in a woven scarf echoed empowerment by the Spirit and being sent on mission; it recalled the strands and the rich tapestry of life, and was an invitation to each to continue forming patterns, clear to all, of mercy.
Celebrations continued into the afternoon as the community moved venue to The Pavilion Convention Centre and there shared a meal, drinks, toasts, jubilee cake, stories and the blessings of one another’s company.
Sisters unable to attend the celebrations were: Julia Chambers RSM, Kathleen Harnedy RSM, Eileen Pollard RSM, Mary Marietta Riedy RSM, Maria Teresa Shanahan RSM and Mary Edwardine Walsh RSM.
