August launch for Ballarat East sister’s new book
Congratulations to Sister Elizabeth Dowling (Ballarat East) on the publication of her book Taking Away the Pound: Women, Theology and the Parable of the Pounds in the Gospel of Luke.
Liz completed her Doctor of Theology at the Melbourne College of Divinity in 2005. Her book, a reworked version of this doctoral thesis, explores the Parable of the Pounds in the Gospel of Luke and argues that it is a story about the use and abuse of power.
Those who challenge oppressive practices suffer the consequences. The book then uses the power dynamic evident in this parable as a lens through which to view the women characters in the Gospel of Luke.
It argues that the same dynamic is evident in the characterisation of Lukan women. Those who challenge an oppressive system suffer the consequences, while those who reinforce the system are portrayed well.
The book will be launched at Aquinas Campus of Australian Catholic University on August 9, 2007.
